Hey all
My dad has an EB v8 auto. It kicks down properly when you put the foot down and shifts back normally when slowing down but he has no manual control over the gears with the shifter. If you select 1, 2 or 3 it does the same as being in drive. Has anybody come across this before? The gearbox has been changed and the issue remained the same.

Very common. The Transmission Range Sensor on the side of the gearbox has probably failed - so it cant tell the ECU that the other gears have been manualy chosen. They are heat-affected as well.
Replace the Sensor/switch, make sure the shifter is aligned (Procedure in a gregories), and you should be away Before you do this though - Try undoing the round connector in the engine bay that goes to the gearbox - clean the contacts, and connect it back together. That can make it work as well |

Thanks mate I will give that a go. Would the selector switch have been replaced when the box was replaced?

Maybe, maybe not.....most of the time, when removing the old Gear Position switch, they will break....they get rusted onto the shifter shaft. There should be a small heatshield for it too....only the V8's had that.

Ill start with that and all of the electrical connections. Im just hoping to rule out an ECU fault. Cheers guys.

These days it can also be the trans harness is buggered.
Do a self test. If you have both a trans temp and shift posi fault it can very well be the harness. They're all pretty old and baked now. |
