Hey, I'm looking at building an XD or XE or similar in the near future with a Cleveland V8. I've got an old Cleveland here and I've got a few questions:
1) Can I legally use an XA-XC Cleveland engine in an XD/XE, assuming I run all the correct emmisions gear? 2) Will an electronic dissy fit into an XA-XC Cleveland engine? 3) I assume that the engine I have is an XA-XC engine, because it has a points dissy at the moment, is there any ways to tell? 4) What's the best and easiest way to tell if I have a 302, a 351 or a 400M? 5) Which gearbox is better to use out of C4, C6, C10 and FMX? Cheers, Gab |

Late XC yes in an XD. Providing the donor motors meets ADR 27A you will be fine. 2) Will an electronic dissy fit into an XA-XC Cleveland engine? Factory Bosch one from an XD will fit in but wont work properly as a long term solution as the shaft is 13mm where the early stuff is half inch. It will flog out. Late XCs had an electronic dissy in them the control box separate on the inner guard. 3) I assume that the engine I have is an XA-XC engine, because it has a points dissy at the moment, is there any ways to tell? Xfalcon.com has a thread with info on how to decode your Clevo number. Its called decoding your clevo from memory. 4) What's the best and easiest way to tell if I have a 302, a 351 or a 400M? Measure the stroke through a plug hole. 3" for 302 and 3.5" for 351. If the motor is out of the car drop the sump and replace the gasket. 302 will have 302 on the crank. Australian 351 will have 351 on the crank. 4MA or 4MAB are American cranks and they are all 351. 5) Which gearbox is better to use out of C4, C6, C10 and FMX? Personal choice. For a high performance application a built C4. C6 is big block and F truck stuff. Too heavy and power sapping. C10 is a pan fill C4. FMX gives a soft lazy shift but once again heavy and power sapping. Cheers, Gab

Just a bit of trivia....a C10F was a dealer replacement for a stuffed FMX. It was cheaper to fit a brand new C10F than to rebuild an FMX.....and that was in the late 70's.
C6 and FMX's had a big yoke too. IIRC, a C5 was found in the Bronco's....it's a C4 with a deeper pan, and obviously had a transfer case instead of an extension housing.

Don't start this C10 s**t again. There is NO SUCH THING AS A C10! Matt is correct...it's a f**k pan fill C4!
A C5 is just a lock-up converter C4 and was in more than just Bronco's. |

I seen one with me own eyes.....the tag on it said "C10F". I had never even heard of one before this. I thought this was odd being fitted to a ZH Fairlane, 351, disc brake 9" LSD...all original factory fittment.....but had this C10F in it. I queered the parts guys at Tropical Ford ( they are near retirement age, not whipper snappers ), and they said back in the day, they kept 3 to 5 brand new C10F's on the shelf, because it was cheaper than rebuilding a fried FMX. That whole drivetrain now lives in an XD sedan. Maybe C10F is a code of some sort ??????......beats me, I just know what I saw.

Yes and it was a Pan Fill C4 because even Ford realised it was better than an FMX. Put it this way, they could have called it "Bruce" and it would still be a C4. |
