Slowly brake fluid leaking from where the master cylinder touches the brake booster down and on the chassis and has peeled off the paint. It is slow but I can see the tracks of the leak on the outside of the brake booster. I bought a fairly excellent second hand master cylinder is there another possible cause like an O ring or seal ?

Im guessing gasket as with a few cars ive seen theres a gasket inbetween the master cylinder and booster.

There should be no fluid present where the master cylinder meets the booster, so it should not be leaking there. I would look first at the connection with the brake lines on the side of the cylinder, the pressure sensor (or blanking bolt), or the join between the fluid reservoir and the cylinder. Give it a good clean with parts cleaner or brake cleaner spray, take it for a spin, then inspect it carefully for any wetness. If it IS leaking through the join with the booster, the master cylinder o-rings have probably failed.

You can buy rebuild kits for your master cylinder from the likes of ABS Brake services or other brake specialists for a fraction of what a new cylinder will cost.
Pretty easy to do, basically just a full set of seals and O rings.

If it is leaking where the Master Cylinder bolts to the booster, then your seals ahve gone in the Master Cylinder. Rplace with a good second hand or rebuilt unit or rebuild it. As has been said, kits are available for these. |

They most commonly leak from the two rubber grommets between the reservoir and master cylinder. This causes a leak down the side of the master, and dribbles down the booster as if the rear of the master is leaking.
Unfortunately I have not found a separate source for those two grommets.
