Hi, i have a 98 ford el, and when i am driving and go over 3000rpm the air box explodes, by explode i mean it bends all the clips out of place and pops, sometimes damaging the box top. If i duct tape it shut then the rubber bit after the box pops. There is usually a rough sound like petrol is cutting off and on just before it pops.
It seemed to start happening after getting a power steering leak fixed by replacing the hose and switch. It has also started to run really rough all of a sudden, and quick sharp turns when cold cause it to sound like there is a massive hold in the exhaust. Any ideas what it could be?

Cheers,
Tim

Maybe switch to an ef intake, they had a tube for back pressure built in before the throttle body. Should be cheap from a wreckers. Just replaces the el tube from box to throttle body. I did this in reverse for my nf a while ago.

Thanks for your replies. The car broke down today on my way to the mechanics. He tells me the distributor has stripped and the engine needs to be replaced :(

Probably as more and more get their distributors replaced with crap chinese replacements this will become more common. I know my distributor didnt have bosch printed on it anywhere in the old el. I pulled the gear off an ef cam angle sensor and put on my chinese dizzy and it never lunched my next motor in the time I had it.

Everyone just needs to pull their fingers out, and stop doin sht the easy way, yes it takes another 15 mins of your day to swap the gears over.. but prevents sht like this.

it is getting rather common now.. and wouldnt be common If people would put their matching gears onto their chinese dissy..

the problem is that most people don't know until its to late, even the average mechanics don't know about the problem..
so unless your a e series/sohc enthusiast and know the hidden faults, your screwed..lol

I bought mine already stuffed so I was smart and prevented it from happening again
