Hey guys, just bought an NA Fairlane about a week ago , I asked a question about climate control / dash etc not working and that's now fixed, turned out to just be a fuse and everything came good.

The minor problem I'm hoping you knowledgeable guys might be able to help with is this: up until the point I put the fuse in mentioned above, I have had no problems with the alt light. After putting the fuse in I drove to the local shops, no worries, then when I started it afterward it started fine, then the alt light came on solid for about 10 seconds then went off. It came on then went off very briefly about 1/2 hour later but hasn't done it again. Everything electrical seems fine, its charging up etc. - but I'm slightly paranoid about it.... any ideas or comments would be greatly appreciated...

Hi I own a Na2 fairlane and had a similar problem. First thing I did was check the voltage all was fine. Then I checked the terminals on the alternator (I'm assuming this is what your talking about) they were dirty cleaned it up and still no fix. Then I take the dash out checked the plugs and the globe for it. One plug was just in but wasn't clipped so I pushed it in and still no fix. After all this I checked the fuses and they were all fine. In the end I gave up but about a week later it was working fine don't know how but I did find out something weird. When I had the fuse out of the cigarette lighter the dash wouldn't light up don't know why so it pays to check them all and all the wiring incase ones had the wire melted due to the exhaust.

Hope something I said helps. I'll look through my workshop manual and see if there's anything in there that could help

Cheers thanks mate, I wonder if it was related at all to me replacing that fuse - as the trip computer started to beep it came on solid, no flicker, then shut itself off again like it was on purpose...weird

Is it the charge battery light that's playing up?

I found it in the manual but had to go out so I'll write up what it says when I get home.

Charge indicator lamp remains on

(1) loose or broken alternator drive belt: adjust or renew the drive belt
(2) faulty regulator unit: check and renew the regulator unit
(3) faulty alternator: check and overhaul the alternator
(4) short to earth in warning lamp circuit: check and repair circuit

Charge indicator lamp does not operate

(1) lamp bulb blown: check and renew the faulty bulb
(2) open circuit in wiring or bulb socket: check and rectify the open circuit
(3) faulty alternator diode: overhaul the alternator

That's all it says in the manual I wrote it word for word also.
You should buy a manual there about $40 at repco and you will be glad you have it for as long as you have the lane.

Also welcome to the big a*** ford family.

Cheers mate, really appreciate it! yeh, this is my first foray into the later model stuff, had mainly earlies for years and years ( main car is an XB 351 coupe but the family's getting too big to get hauled around in it, hence the fairlane..)Actually had 3 other Fairlanes in the past, a 289 ZA (1967) , a barge fairlane ( 1958) and a 351 ZH (1977?) amongst some 120 + cars over my life...

hey can I ask one more favour? having a few dramas with the drivers power window not working but haven't even had a chance to check it out yet - in your manual is there a diagram of the wiring actually at the window motor? I want to run power into the motor itself to see whether its that that's fried or the switch / wiring / relay..I think its two wires but not sure if its like one wire + earth = up, the other wire + earth = down, or if its more like pos and neg into those two wires for up, reverse polarity for down....obviously don't want to stuff it up!!

Yeah not a problem I'll have a look and if there's a diagram I'll take a pic and pm it to you. If it's to big for that I can email it to you.
