what manifold was it running? it could have had an external waste gate ??
if not, that's just straight out bodgy...

running no blow off valve is not that un common, quite a few turbo engines don't run bov's.
I would be more concerned about the wastegate

Id say someone has swapped a stuffed turbo that had been modified for an external gate with the one off the car before it was sold after the accident.
There should of been a gasket I reckon.

manifold bolts on the turbos were known to work themselves loose.

it was even in the sceduled servicing that the manifold bolt be checked for tightness.

seems like with wastegate shut and no B.O.V. somthing will go bang when you give it.

sorry guys but i made a mistake ,it is NOT welded shut  .the welded part is a sleeve on the out side , and the shaft is inside of it and it freely moving now. ( sprayed it with inox) just dropped of the turbo to get new bearings and seals fitted and a new compressor wheel that spools up faster . $580 for rebuild and $215 for new wheel

It is quite common on V8 turbo engines to use gold hi temp silicon ONLY on flanges..
Finger tight left overnight then tighten...drilling the outer flange bolt holes larger to let the flange move
With heat prevents manifold from warping ..
