I've just finished installing a turbo onto my 6 cyl eb falcon. On start up I noticed that the impellor doesn't start spooling until I hit roughly 2500 rpm. Then if I drop off the revs back to idle it just seems to free wheel until it stops again. At first I thought the turbo wasn't getting oil and had ceased. That was not the case and I can turn it freely by hand. My thoughts are that the wastegate is stuck open. Is there anyway to confirm this without taking it off?

Pulled the wastegate off and it seems to be working fine. Not sure what the problem is. Anyone got any ideas? When spinning even at higher revs it doesn't seem to make boost either. I've checked all my intercooler piping for leaks but it's all sealed. I'm new to turbos so this has me stumped

Cheap one from an early spoolin boost kit. Not many k's through it and it seems to be working fine.

When you say you checked the wastegate did you ensure the metal "o" ring was in there, as I got caught out once when I didn't know it had fallen out when installing the gate.

Also has this been running with a turbo prior to this no boost issue? post a pic of your manifold & gate set up.

I managed to solve the no boost issue. The welds were too close to the bolt holes and the manifold wasn't sitting flush. I trimmed off some of the welds and now it sits much better and spools as it should. My only concern now is when i hook up the boost gauge it barely gets to 3psi and only starts making boost at 3500 rpm. Its running and making boost now so thats kind of a win, I'll have more of a tinker when the new exhaust gets done.

Use 13mm headed bolts or better still studs/brass nuts for the log manifolds. Make sure there are no exhaust leaks, sealing ring fitted to waste gate with gasket sitting on top of that, boost leak test cooler piping at 10psi with air compressor checking for leaks with soapy water. Exhaust will need to be at least 2.5" too. Turbos will only make boost under load eg being driven on the road, free reving in neutral wont do much of anything unless using antilag haha.

If it makes boost just reving with no load?
The turbo would be too small..

I have yet to check boost under load. I'm new to the boosted scene so info like this helps heaps. I need to run the hose through the fire wall and mount the boost gauge inside the car. This should happen today and hopefully get it out of the shed and onto the road.
Turbo_Will- I currently have a 2.5" exhaust but am getting a 3" one with high flow cat fitted next Friday so that should help.

Yep try driving it should have the gate open by 3000rpm. Yep ebxr8380 the turbos in our older kits were on the small side but perfect for a street car, we ran 11.9/117mph with one in a street spec eb. Yea mate 3" will be perfect for it. Any questions man feel free to give us a call.
