I have an Ellery gearbox workshop manual, but it doesn't specify which input shaft - main shaft bearing type it is referring to. So, can someone please let me know the input shaft preload for early 15 individual rollers, and late tapered bearing styles. TIA

Using a dial gauge, aim for zero preload if using the 15 rollers and 3-5 thou preload for a tapered bearing. Have you got an assortment of shims?

Thanks for the reply. I do have a good selection of shims left over from a T5 o/h kit, plus the shims that were already in the bearing retainer

Another question. When removing the input shaft with a tapered bearing, nothing should fall into the case, right? The tapered bearing is pressed onto the main shaft, and the cone is pressed into the input shaft, eh?

Just don't want another episode like I had when checking the input shaft on an early T5 with the 15 individual rollers, that fell into the case when I removed the input shaft.

There's a blocking ring that fits into the 3/4 synchroniser assembly. It's the only thing that can fall out when you remove the input shaft. Make sure you don't use any silicon on the input shaft surfaces when checking the preload.

The later WC boxes with the taper bearing have a preload of 0.01- 0.
1mm.
With the 15 x rollers, fit them with grease before assy to hold them in.

Don't forget to fit the input shaft cover with the oil drain at the bottom.

Thanks. So to be safe I should remove the input shaft with the gearbox input shaft pointing upwards then?

Yes, if you have a tapered bearing and not rollers.
