Wanting to clarify...I know au xr models have adaptive shift but what about BA onwards?

All model BA - FGs have adaptive shift standard.

Yes even XT. Its standard feature in the autos. There is adaptive (normal driving) , Performance mode then Sports shift (tiptronic). Applies with All auto transmission being 4,5 or 6 speed. Column shift utes may be the only loser with sports shift and performance mode.

So to use the performance mode is with the + and - gears?

No that is sports shift mode. (SSS)
Performance mode is when you just tip the gear stick to the left and dont move it either up or down.
You will see a "PEF" come up on the cluster. Car still changes up the gears and down by itself but is more responsive and holds gears longer etc. Similar to having the power button turned on on the E series..

If its a 4 speed, it wont select 4th in P mode.

Mont 5.0 is correct providing the car is not exceeding 160 km/h. On normal roads that should not be happening anyway so yes it will stay in 3rd.
