Hi,
I have an duel fuel EL and i advanced my timing to about 7-8 degrees and its so much better but i run mostly LPG and i want to know how much i can run up to? Thanks |

Not worth the hassle to experiment. With the chip, it's all done for you, and I reckon, from experience, that it was the best $200 I ever spent on the car.
If you advance the timing it is always advanced, thus, when you don't need it advanced, e.g.: higher revs, it is all out of kilter. With the chip, it advances when required, and the retards when not needed. With the anti knock sensors, you really don't know when you are too far advanced, as the computer tries to retard it. Quite a bit of valve damage can be done if you are not too careful. Personally, wouldn't try to advance the stock timing, even on LPG. |

Ok, and what about when i run the car on 98? will it ping? AS i have Duel fuel and i run 98 and LPG.
So the more advance i do, the more torque i will get on LPG? |

So the more advance i do, the more torque i will get on LPG? its a trial and error thing, try it and see, if it pings on 98 back the timing off a few deg and try again.. if your running duel fuel its a trade off, to get best results with lpg you will have some pinging on petrol, to get best results on petrol lpg will lack power... |

(And no engine is knock-limited at low load.) If you keep advancing the ignition, you eventually get to the point where torque flattens off then starts to drop sharply (google "spark hook test"). Ignition starts Before Top Dead Centre - ie, while the piston is still moving upwards on the compression stroke. The more you advance it, the earlier it starts. If you go too far, you start creating more pressure on the piston coming up on the compression stroke (trying to push it back down and the crank backwards) than you gain on the piston going down on the power stroke - a net reduction in torque. And there are other factors too - like, the higher the effective compression ratio, the faster the flame speed, and the less advance you need to achieve max torque. So, unless you are prepared to pay for a full dyno tune, you really have to do some experimentation to find out what works best for your combination. Or - like everyone is saying - you could gain the benefit of others' experimentation and buy a pre-programmed J3 chip - which costs little more than a blank chip.

OK, well i have it on 8 degrees and its seems to be ok, no pinging on 98 or LPG?
But i want to know what other people have done on LPG |
