I'm not sure if this suppose to be interior or exterior mods.
I've got couple of squeaky and slightly rusted Lift-O-Mat's that keep the boot lid raised on my AUII. I'm considering replacing these with new ones. I have noticed the bottom attachment has no nut , just a round piece of housing material (I assume metal) which the lower swivel ball is located in. Are these easy to get our or does one need to cut them out with an angle grinder and make up a new ball joint socket for the lower Lift-O-Mat to sit in? If its the boot struts your talking about then they should just click in and out once you get a flat blade screwdriver and pull back the metal strip at the bottoms. They are the release tabs. You should not need to undo any nuts to change them.

Thanks for your reply. I was not aware these have a release strap. I was under the impression one had to undo the nut at the top and some how remove or lever out the ball joint that hooks into a round holder / housing without damaging the vehicle. The connectors themselves look rusty. Can they be reconditioned or easier / cheaper to replace with new one? Cheers, Bondy |

Check around the mounts on the AU for rust as well. Pic of the clip that you pop to remove the strut. Attachment:

Thanks for your advice on removing these. Are the round housing locators available new or does one need to have these machined to suit? If they need to be machined, what grade stainless steel would be recommended? Replacing with stainless steel to avoid rust instead of standard steel. I've attached some pics , are these the same as yours?

They dont look too bad. I would not go taking them of. If there is any rust behind them you probably will never be able to screw them back in because you have disturbed it. I say clean them up put a bit of grease on them and be done with it.

I have an EF so I can't compare with the AU.
These are on Ebay http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Treaded-10mm ... 4185629fde The ones in your pics dont show a hex for using a spanner. Are they actually removable? Maybe someonr else can answer this. |

in my experience with au's.. they don't come out !
ive had a few wrecks and tried everything and I destroy them every time trying to get them out. imo, clean them up with some sand paper or a dremal if you got one? then paint the exposed area |

Thanks to everyone providing advice and comments on those bootlid lifters.
The main issue with mine is they are starting to squeal each time the bootlid is raised and lowered, I hate squeals, that's when I noticed rust build up on the lower round holders. They do have a hex nut on top 13mm spanner can easily undo from the boot attachment, it's the lower attachment that is the problem. From what I seen, Troyman, you are probably correct, buggers cant be unscrewed , surely they could not have been pushed in at the time of manufacture, I'm wondering if those round holders where the other swivel joint sits in was screwed in with those vice grips. They don't look like they have been welded in position. Has anyone used vice grips (lock jaw type) on those round holders. I'll try on a wrecked vehicle before attempting mine. If they are still around. Cheers. |

Can the original ones from the AUII be substituted or modified with another from a different model Ford? If so, which model would be the closest fit?

If you can get in behind the panel, you could use any of the Bonnet Strut Balls. Looking at whar=t I can see of the picks you posted, the EF/EL bonnet mounts look very similar in "length"
