Hi all, I have a 98 EL with the diff leaking out of the Centre and spraying the under side of the car
I have had the seal replaced but still does it, any ideas would be great. |

Probably need to replace the yolk as well. May be grooved.

Where on the yoke is it leaking from ?

The yolk is the part that the universal joint is bolted to. As the car moves, it spins around. Sometimes, over time (and the car is 16 years old, and the diff has spun umpteen million times!!) the seal can create a groove in the yolk "shaft" and this can cause a leak. However, if you had the seal replaced, the mechanic, if he was worth his salt, should have told you that the yolk was grooved, and maybe needed replacing

Tailshaft bolts to the Rear axle flange which is bolted to the Pinion Shaft. What you have said about wear on the yoke can occur on the pinion shaft. My guess is that the oil seal on the pinion shaft has not been fitted correctly and has chewed out. |

Terminology aside, depends where the leak is coming from - it isn't always the seal.
If the OP makes another visit here one of these days to add more detail, it might be worth giving a more detailed answer.

Cheers for all the replies guys, yeah it doesn't drip out between the dif and flange when sitting still just sprays the bottom of the car when in motion, was told by another mechanic that it needs to be reconditioned as the flange has been disturbed to replace the seal affecting the bearing preload for the spigot shaft (which can only be reset with a new crush washer and the crown wheel removed )

sounds like first mechanic may have overtightened the flange nut when replacing seal the first time...resulting in a broken crush washer and excessive bearing pre load which will, over time result in bearing failure.

Whether it's a Diff pinion yoke, or drive flange, they have the same idea with where the seal runs.
If it is grooved, it can be fixed with a Speedi-Sleeve, and a new oil seal, on either of them. Another place oil can leak from is from the Spline.....when the oil seal was replaced, did they put some 567 Loctite on the spline to help seal it....???? This helps a lot.
