If i remember correctly, EA series 1's were a 3 speed auto.
can anyone verify this? Also, is an EA S-Pack series 1 a 3spd?

All auto series 1 EA's were the three speed. The four speed tranny didn't come along till the series 2.

i had a EA ghia 3sp auto early '89- i dont think they were called series I though just EA and the series II were 4 sp auto '89 sept+ |

cool, that's what i thought.
im looking at one on the weekend and i'm not sure if it's series one or 2. I'm also guessing they have series 2 on the ID tags?

I doubt it, however you may be abe to tell if you know the build codes, and the build date (after sept 89) Other thing to look for in a series 2 are tibbe locks.

If its an auto, simply look for a P R N D 3 2 1 face and a power/econ switch on shift selector, otherwise it will have P R N D 2 1.
Also check the throttle body, it will have a cable running back towards and connecting to the gearbox if its a 3 speed auto as well, the 4 speed is all electronic so doesnt need a cable. The 4 speed auto seriesII EA's also got the wonderful badge on the back stating it has a 4 speed electronic auto gearbox as well.

yeah it was a 4spd auto, the box was rooted anyway.
it slammed through gears.
