Hi all, recently I had to do the head gasket/head repair and ever since then the oil pressure has been an issue, it used to be (what I considered) fine but now when cold/cool the oil pressure is as it used to be for the last 11yrs but once it gets to operating temp for a period of time, say half hour it starts to drop, when cool the oil pressure sits at around 80% at cruising speed and drops to around 40-50% at idle, however once up to temp this drops to around 50% at cruise and at idle it drops to 10% or even lower, enough to bring up the light which means the car has a very short range now.
When this pressure change has taken effect the temp also rises by about 20% on the guage. Any ideas what I can do to try and work out what the issue is, any tests etc? Is it likely to be the oil pump and if so is that hard to change? Cheers....

could be a lot of things.
needs a oil change. sender/sensor switch is faulty ( had this on my EL before) oil gallery is blocked oil pick up is blocked. id recommend a oil flush and a oil change with a good quality oil to start with then look at the rest after if the issue is still there

Oil change has been done.
Is the sensor known to behave in this way, ie read normal for about 30mins of running then slowly start to drop every time?

if its cracked or starting to die
mine use to read extremely low while at idle and cruising speed if i revved it it would got up to half way. mine turned out to be cracked between the nut and plastic housing.

Not sure how this correlates with the temp rise as well but could be coincidental, where is the oil pressure sender unit located?

Engine temp rises, oil gets hotter and thins.
If the oil pressure is dropping at normal operating temp and then the engine temp rises further, check your bottom end (Main Bearings). Last edited by SWC on Mon Mar 02, 2015 5:11 pm, edited 1 time in total. |

looks like this if you have a oil gauge on your dash

Hi all,
My EL has been doing the same since changing the head recently but not as low and the original posters. Used to come up nice and high on the guage and NEVER moved. Now the guage needle really starts dancing when it's hot and slowing for an intersection (comes down to halfway). I thought it may be a bit more bearing clearance between the new head and the old cam and rocker gear. But I'd rather blame the change in oil weight I had to go to because they stopped making the grade of oil I was using before the head swap. I went from 15W-50 to 15W-40 from the same manufacturer (Total Lubricants). Not going to lose sleep over it as the guage is only slightly lower at cruising speeds. Not looking for answers, just thought the oil grades might shed a bit of light for Overkill. He's just done an oil change himself. Not sure on the milage or extent of headwork he's done, a little thicker oil might be an idea to get it up to an acceptable pressure. Just my two cents worth so none of you experts shoot me now! Cheers Q |

First things first - swap out the sender - 27mm long socket IIRC. Easiest thing to do.
The membrane stretches and can tear over time - your reading will then be zero all the time, and It'll leak. A 2nd hand one should be okay - they do fail, but not often.

The extent of the work done was to remanufacture it so it's all back to "normal", ie cracks repaired and the eaten out water jacket rebuilt, looked like new...
A bit like this.... I'm running 20w50 oil like I always have for the last 12 yrs, I get zero fluctuations but the pressure at idle is lower then at cruise and this 'fades" over time, say 30-40mins of driving once up to temp, the temp also increases slightly on the guage around the same time so I very much doubt that I'd have two sensors failing although it is possible I doubt it...
