Hello,
I am trying to remove my water pump from my BA falcon to replace the litttle 'O' ring that is leaking water. I don't have a pulley puller and they cost $130 is there any thing I can do to get around this or do I just have to buy the pulley puller....? Is there anything else I should know about doing this job? Cheers |

You talking about the little o ring at the back of the pump to the water pipe?
Im not sure why you need a puller. If you undo the pipe mounting brackets where necessary you should be able to pull the pipe out, and replace the o-ring. Nigel |

You might need to undo the holding tab that connects the pipe to a bolt between the motor and bellhousing to do the job without removing the pump. The other fixture is halfway along the block underneath the exhaust manifold. Actually, i'm thinking E-series, not sure about BA.
If you can only get the pipe part of the way out, you could just add some silicon sealant around the old o-ring and push it back together. I have used silicone on an old o-ring and it has worked fine so far. I reckon i might just remove the pump, it's just four bolts. No puller required, the whole pump including pulley comes off in one go. If you do it this way, when you replace the pump you will likely need to use silicone sealant to make it seal again. There are actually two areas where silicon is needed because there is a plate in there sandwiched between the pump and block, and you need to seal both sides of the plate.

I suggest you use a spanner or some other tool if need be. I manage to use a 1/4" drive socket, it is awkward but works for me. As you undo the last awkward bolt, progressively pull the pump out, which maintains if not improves access to the bolt head. The EF/EL/AU/BA waterpumps are the same. I just fitted an EL pump to an AU block the way i described.
I haven't used a puller on a plastic pulley but it sounds dangerous. It's generally good to buy tools, tools generally save you money, but not always, and you don't need it in this case.

Hello,
I just finished the job this weekend using the pulley puller. With the BA you need the pulley puller as there is one bolt that is behind the pulley and this bolt is attached to the alternater/ engine block and the water pump can not be moved out to allow to bolt to be fully undone. have the pulley off also made the job easier as you can get a rachet set in there to undo and do up the water pump bolts. Cheers. |

also, the pulley puller only works one the metal parts of the pulley so there is no risk of breaking any parts.

I haven't worked on a BA but am told the water pump is the same. My socket (1/4" drive sidchrome) is sufficiently able to fit past the pulley, and since the extension shaft is thinner it can sit beside the pulley.
I know you need to unbolt the steel water pump pulley on the three belt setup, but i haven't had to remove the plastic pulley with the EF/EL/AU setup.

Just found this whilst looking for something else.
Pulley puller kit: Do a search on eBay US for a Blue Point CJ132A Pulley Puller Kit (ie search for CJ132A). If you're not in a rush then take a few weeks and eventually you'll find an almost new one for around $US20 on an auction listing. There are usually Buy-It-Now ones for around $US50. I bought one a few months ago... and then found an almost new one... $US20 each. I re-sold one locally for $A100 and kept the other one. Makes me ponder getting into importing and selling secondhand specialised tools. Postage is expensive. I buy things like this when I think that I'll need them in the future and then bank them up at http://www.shipito.com until I've got enough stuff to have re-packed into one big box and sent to me. I've replaced the water pump on BF Falcons twice, and it's taken me hours each time. I didn't know to poke a socket through the holes in the power steering pump to remove it. Removing the old water pump gasket was painfully show, so I'm going to try using a Dremel and small wire brush next time (after spraying gasket stripper on first). Previously I spent way too long trying to scrape the old gasket off. To remove and re-fit the water pump I've used spanners and done it the slow and hard way. If I get stuck next time them I'm just going to remove the bumper and radiator (both easy to do) so that I have complete front access to the &^#$% water pump. |
