Is it possiblt to rip off the fan run by the engine and stick on a twin thermo fan set up like that on the ELs...how much power does the fan run by the engine consume??

well fans's can be $80 upwards & parts to make the fans work about $75 but otherwise you don't loose engine power but when the fans come on you will notice it by the drop in power (i.e)headlights & dash dimming a bit but the car will be cooler.

They do use a fair bit of power but the electrical ones do too, they drain current which means the alternator has to work harder to keep up. When both are running, the power loss is probably quite similar although the I believe the thermos would still be a bit more efficient. However, if your cooling system is in good condition, you will find the thermos come on quite rarely under normal driving conditions so there is your power saving.

i did a thermo swap on an eb 5L. used 2 10" electric fans (in summer with air-con on i wish i had used 12"s) with a relay and a switch on the dash. comes on when i switch it on, off when i switch it off (just gotta keep an eye on the temp in traffic, but that's not a bad habit to get into). no hp figures for you but a substantial seat of the pants difference, she revs much more freely. no annoying clutch fan whirr when cruisin now either, just v8 burble. 8-)

That must be annoying having to switch them on and off again dude.
Have you looked at getting a Thermostat to control them?

Yes must be annoying and one day you are going to forget. The davies craig thermo switches are only $40 and can be set to come on at any temp.

anoying? surprisingly not. everyone should keep an eye on their instruments regardless of how the motor is cooled and lubricated, it just forces the forming of a good habit. the fans are only needed when siting in slow or still traffic for more than a few minutes, something i dont see much of with the hours i work. suits me. anyway, this thread was started to ask about the difference between electric and clutch fans. as i said before, a noticable difference as the motor revs more freely, and less noise competing with the v8 exhaust.

oh, & veeate, if you decide to remove the fan clutch off the pulley on the 5.0, it is a right hand thread, unlike many 6's left hand threads. it is done so the rotation of the motor makes it tighter, rather than gradually looser.
