Hi, wondering if anyone else has attempted to convert a MK-1 Escort from auto to manual?? I'm wondering if the crossmember mounts are in the same place?? and if the 2 piece tailshaft is the same?? I WAS going to use a 2L cortina 'type E' gearbox, but after getting it in I found the rossmember on the box was too far forward and the gearstick was to far back, and the tailshaft was too short (Just). I've got a Escort 'Type E' on it's way, but still worried about the crossmember and tailshaft. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
I've used the Auto shell due to the larger tranz tunnel, so for later engine and tranz mods I don't need to enlarge the tunnel. |

I have done an auto to manual conversion on a MK2 Escort van a few years ago & found only 2 bolt holes lined up. Had to modify the crossmember with 2 pieces of flat bar so all 4 bolt holes could be used.
I had to use the manual tailshaft. |

Thanks for that. Doing a ground up rebuild and it's a nightmare. only things I'm not replacing are the shell and rear seat. Be worth it in the end ........................ I hope.

I did it years ago with a cortina box. I liked where the shifter ended up and wasn't using a centre consol.
Crossmember will need to be either modified or make a new one. If you are doing a ground up rebuild, the work to get the gearbox mounted should be a walk in the park |

I've got a cortina box just siting under it right now, but the stick would hit the hand brake, so I'm chasing an Escort box. also the mount on a cortina box is way too far forward, I'm planning on being able to give this Escort a bit of curry and am worried if I do put rails that are too long between the crossmember and the crossmember mounts, as I am going over rough stuff it may put stress on the rails or the crossmember mount/floor pan and eventually crack. It looks as if even the escort box will be a little far forward, though not much, but I think I may of found an answer though, a cortina crossmember. The early cortina's came out with a horse-shoe shaped crossmember, so I'm chasing one of them aswell, just in case I do need it.

escort box will have its mount too far forward as well, i just converted my MKII to manual and the shifter came through the old auto hole, i made a new mount by welding half an auto and half a manual crossmember together and filling in the rest with 3mm plate.
problem with corty boxes is that you need to cut out part of a structural member to get the hole far enough back for the shifter

All depends on which manual (type E, type 1, type 3, type 9, etc), which belhousing, and which extension housing. Different extension husings have the mounts in different places along the box. I'm using a 'Type E' with a 2L bellhousing and a MK-1 extension housing to get the mount as far back as possible but still have the stick come through the auto hole. The 'Type E' with the cortina extension housing was way too far forward. All the different combinations are a nightmare, but I'm slowly figuring it out.

Type 9 gearbox mount is further back than a 4 speed mount, so type 9 would fit easier, but not blowing that much on a box. I managed to get a Dellow bellhousing & clutch to put a Falcon T5 behind an Escort motor (but have got a Zetec to RWD conversion .... Zetec has the same bellhousing bolt pattern as Escort engines).
