hey guys just wondering how do you tighten your harmonic balancer bolt without the crack turning?

think we did a 'small' turn of the motor to undo & tighten up ... word of warning DO NOT actually start the car .. just a 'quick' on/off of key - had breaker bar resting on subrail
someone else may have a betterer way of doing it |

got the motor out atm just replace the timing cover gasket would it hurt to use a air rattle gun?

if the motors out, screw one bell housing bolt back into the block and get a large flat head screwdriver in against that bolt into the ring gear teeth to hold the crank from turning

The bolt in the starter motor Holes, and using a screwdriver is the norm.

Should be okay, you should only need to hold the balancer pulley with a rag, provided the rattle gun has a decent amount of torque. Best too if you creep marked the bolt and balancer before undoing. if you cant flick the key quick enough to prevent it from starting then your doing it wrong.....

I used to insert new ends on them that's why I know. They are cast iron. |

You can use the starter to "crack" a frozen pulley bolt that won't come out. But don't try to tighten it with the starter. The torque is immense. If you tighten it even a fraction of a revolution too far, something is going to break. If you're lucky, it'll be your breaker bar - but I wouldn't bet my engine on it.
+1 for big screwdriver in the flexplate/flywheel teeth, supported by a bolt in the block to keep the crank from turning. It works like a charm....and it's safe.
