I've had my tyres replaced few days ago and asked the tyre bloke as to why my front tyres have extreme wear on the outside.

I was told my lower ball joints are knackered. :(

I've ordered a new pair of front lower ball joints, does anyone know what needs to be done to remove these ball joints and placed them back in.

Bloke next door to me has a hoist I could use. :)

Any advice / instructions is welcome

Thanks, Peter

Best buy a repair manual, then you've got it to do lots of other things too!! 8-) Save lotsa $$$$ too

@ creature 3,

Yes I have two repair manuals, one of the repair manuals does not say much and the other says a few things but not in any sequence.

The arms will need to come out of the car & you use a press to remove the old ball joints & fit the new ones. Unless you have one of those fancy expensive "on car" mini press tools to do this sort of job.

@ ToranaGuy,

Ok, thanks for that info. The bloke next door has a 20 Tonne press.

He has a hoist to lift the car up, but don't know if I need a floor jack.

Those arms I assume will have to be lifted a bit to take the tension of the ball joints prior to removal.

Would I need a floor jack for this purpose or can a crow bar be used to take the weight on the arm when the hoist is lowered?

Cheers, Peter

There is many ways to do it, but you don't really need to take tension off. Just raise it up on the hoist. Back the nut off that bolts the stub axle to the ball joint, then undo the bolts for the lower arm to sub frame & strut. Then you need a puller or to whack the stub axle so the taper of the ball joint releases, then just remove the arm from the car.

Check out youtube for video's, I'm sure someone has put one up.

Cheers

@ ToranaGuy,

Thanks for the extra info.

I was going to put the car up on the hoist but bloke next door (who has the hoist) reckons still need to have floor jack to take pressure off the ball joints, Hmmmm, maybe he is too conservative.

Might be bit of challenge tensioning the pivot bolts on the arms , book said bounce the front of vehicle few times then tighten up the pivot arm bolts....could be difficult as there is no pit to use and not much room to get under car to tighten those pivot bolts / nuts.

I'll have a google search on youtube and see if there is such a video.

Cheers

A set of car ramps will help you get the car up a bit to get at the bolts to do them up.
