Hey boys, long time no post.....asking this for my dad, he just bought a AU2 XR8 220, 5 spd, 95k very neat/honest car....I've been through the usual E series Windsor mods (gt40p/explorer/2031 cam etc) I know the AU has the decent gear on it to start with, my question is whether there's any reason to perceiver with the std 220 cam with a decent tune?? Or go down the aftermarket cam route? I had an EF with a Crane 2031 & the rest, tuned by Crescent to 178rwkw & it felt a fair bit stronger than this does???

IMO, going to an aftermarket cam is a better option.
The stock Explorer engine output is limited by the GT40P heads, if you've got them, and the Explorer intake. If your father doesn't want to spend money on better flowing aluminium heads, then the current setup is limited to cams up to 0.500" lift. I suppose the first question is how much does he want to spend on the engine?

Doesn't want to spend alot, wanting to stick with the factory heads & manifold.....just wanting to know if there's decent gains to be made by getting the car tuned with the std cam & how those gains would compare to an aftermarket cam/tune??

Take it to Joe at Crescent. AU's run quite rich at WOT so some gains can be made by leaning them out a touch.
A cam like an XE264 or 270 is a worthwhile addition especially if you've done some port work to both heads and intake. |
