hey everyone, I have bought an '97 El Tickford Rebuilt engine (12,000km since rebuild)

I plan on converting the engine to suit my 95 Tickford Ef Xr6 factory ignition system already running in my XR6(if possible), and was interested to know if anyone has already done this before,(or have a fair idea of what's involved) was wondering if they could give me a basic rundown on what they had to change, so that i can be properly prepared to swap it over hopefully all in one weekend,

I know the obvious difference, (dizzy to coil pack)

Appreciate any help or thoughts,

Cheers

You're going from a 60pin PCM to a 104pin PCM so it'll need to change along with it's loom... As far as I know they plug wiring between the PCM harness and the dash harness varies from EF to EL so it will need to be changed to suit... Obviously the engine harness will need to be swapped to EF to get the correct plugs for the coilpack and cam sync sensor...

You will need to mount the coil pack as you say and the cam sync sensor...

I'm thinking that's about it... If I've missed something someone else will chime in...

Cheers,
Tim

Shouldn't have to change any wiring I would think.

In addition to what Tim's said, you'll need to change the timing cover and harmonic balancer so you have provision to fit the crank sensor.

As you are fitting the EL Engine to the EF there are a few things you will need to do but all fairly basic.

1) Remove the Cam Sensor from the EF Engine, Remove the drive gear from the Cam Sensor. Remove the Dizzy from the EL Engine, Remove the drive gear from the Dizzy. Fit the drive gear from the dizzy to the Cam sensor. Fit the cam sensor to the EL Engine following the correct install procedure.

2) Check that the EL Timing Case has the mountings for the Crank Angle Sensor (some EL's had them, some didn't). If not you will need to remove the Timing Case from the EF Engine and fit it to the EL Block. Replace the front Main Seal while you have the timing case off.

3) Check that the Harmonic Balancer has the tone ring for the EF Crank Angle Sensor. If not remove the Harmonic Balancer from the EF Engine (or buy a new one) and fit to the EL Block (some EL's had the tone ring, others didn't).

4) Replace the EL Engine Wiring Loom with the EF Engine Wiring Loom.

5) You will need to use the Engine Mount block from the EF engine as it has the mount point for the EF Coil Pack (or relocate the Coil Pack).

6) Replace the Rear Main Seal on the EL Block. Don't care that the motor is allegadly 12,000Km old or not. Cheap insurance for $10-12. Also do the rear welch plug.

7) Check all the welch plugs while the engine is out.

8) Ensure that you use the EF Alternator as it is 110amp, EL are 100amp. You will notice the difference with the coilpacks.

9) If you havn't replaced your coilpack and leads, do so now, much easier with the engine out.

All else is plug and play.

don't you need the EF dash loom and ecu to fire it up cause EF and EL ECU's are different EF having more pins?
