Hi all,
I'm looking to do a manual conversion in my AUII in the near future and based off reading multiple threads I have found: 1. I'll need to either get a manual tailshaft or shorten mine by 40mm. 2. I need to use an AU Bellhousing (or can use an E-Series and not have two bottom bolts line up). Now, i'd MUCH rather a hydraulic clutch over a cable clutch, and as the B series has a manual clutch naturally i'd like to go this route. My questions: 1. Will a BA box (and bellhousing, as I understand the hydraulic slave cylinder is integrated inside the box) bolt up to an AUII engine?. 2. Does the BA box have the shifter in the same location as the AU (have read differing views on this)? 3. Will I need to modify my crossmember to accomodate the box? (pretty sure I don't - but just want to confirm. 4. Will I have to use a BA clutch or will an AU one work fine? Any help will be much appreciated. |

a ba box and bellhousing will fit onto a au engine,
afaik the shift will be in the same spot as au. you should be able to use your current cross member. if you use a ba box you will need to use a ba clutch and flywheel as the ba box has a 28 spline input shaft? compared to the au 10 spline and the ba uses a larger clutch than an au... |

Thank you very much Troyman, basically exactly what I wanted to know - and thanks for the info on the flywheel and clutch. Can anyone else corroborate this/actually done this conversion?
Thanks, Thomas. |

use the BA crossmember. A BA non turbo clutch is the same diameter as an EB2-AU clutch, but 26 spline input. You will need a Ute gearbox to have the speedo output.

Ok, so using an NA clutch will allow me to keep my current flywheel? Interesting about the speedo output - I take it the ute sensor will allow my current loom to plug right up? Also does the non-ute gearbox not have the sensor at all, and if it doens't is it possible to attach one?
Thanks, Thomas. |

Thanks, Thomas. it is possible to have the extention housing machined to fit the speedo sender. Mal Wood do this. Ute's got a sender in the box as most didn't have ABS, which B-Series use for speedo pickup. You can modify 2 Jaycar speedo correctors to get the speedo to work off ABS. Dansedgli has done this in his Turbo ute. As far as I am aware, yes, you will be able to retain your flywheel.

Ok, sounds like it will just be easier to get a ute box. Unfortunately my AU doesn't have ABS (forte model) so I have to get the speedo from the gearbox - or go to all the effort of installing abs (maybe later down the track). What about the tailshafts - if I can nab a BA manual tailshaft, would this work in lieu of getting mine shortened or buying an AU manual shaft?
Also i'm not going to have to get it engineered or anything am I? Just inform the RTA/Insurance of the change and i'm good to go? Sorry about all the questions... i'm just trying to get as much info as I can before I dive right in. Thanks, Thomas. |

A BA manual tailshaft is slightly too long, and they are also a two piece shaft. Finding a ute box, or having someone modify the BA box would be the best option.
As far as I am aware, a manual conversion does not require engineering. The multiple cars I have been involved with conversions in are not, with no insurance drama's. Better to ask and come out with knowledge, than jump in head first know it all style and f**k everything up.

Dont forget you'll need to attach a master cylinder to your clutch pedal or buy a mal wood one.
A mal wood one is $900 odd. |

You shouldnt hacevto let them know of a manual conversion, my mate took his e series fairmont for blue slip inspection and as far as I know they didnt make a manual fairmont in ef, the workshop didnt look twice at it,

If you are fitting standard equipment you don't need engineering.
Putting a BA t5 I doubt they will notice the difference as only hydraulic set up that is in effect different. If there was a 6 speed in there and you were relying on insurance you would be in all worlds of pain though...

Hey guys,is there a thread or any info on using the 2 jaycar speedo correctors from abs sensors (no abs module)just for ba speedo and ecu? any help would be great cheers Johnny.
