Have owned my Series 2 AU Fairmont for ten months after having a couple of ELs. A couple of weeks ago was travelling down the highway when all of a sudden the revs climbed and speedo dropped. Had no gears! Could not even get reverse. Thought I it may have been a split in the trans pan or ruptured hose but on inspection there was no damage at all. Tried to undo the plug to check the fluid level but could not budge it. Had someone ask me if I thought it had anything to do with the computer but I said I was not sure. Any ideas???

Hello,
As I understand it, the selector puts it in Fwd and Rev. The default is 3rd, and the ECU selects which other gear to use. Seems odd that there wasn't a Bang to indicate something breaking, it still could be something other than the Auto. Push the Car a small amount and see if the Tailshaft turns, and try to start the engine. If it starts it means the flexplate is OK, and a turning Tail shaft means the diff and Uni's are OK. This only leaves the Auto and TC. ( Torque converter ) Hopefully a more knowledgeable other member will have some thoughts.

G'day 96ELGli
She starts and the drive shaft turns. I was thinking that it was the trans but hoping it was not. I can get another one from a mate who has same model he uses as a parts car. |

Hello,
It most likely is, check the radiator and see if there is any Oil in it. Low Trans fluid normally wont stop you, see if any specialists reply tonight. Many Forum members work on Ford's during the day, and Post at night. They may be able to tell you what to look for and what has gone wrong. It could be a simple fix with the Auto still in the Car !
