Hi
hi looking to clean the engine bay up in the ef fairmont and wondered wether theres any problems deleting the expansion tank and using a cap on the top thermostat housing and a normal overflow bottle or wether youll run into problems with that setup. was thinking of either of below. what would yous sugest 1. use aluminium expansion tank with factory low coolant sensor and rubber hoses. 2. use aluminium expansion tank with factory low coolant sensor and braided lines. 3. use aluminium expansion tank with redarc low coolant sensor in top hose and braided lines or rubber hoses. 4. get rid of expansion tank and use a cap on thermostat housing and a normal overflow bottle and a redarc low coolant sensor in top hose. has anyone got pictures of engine bays some with aluminium expansion tanks with braided lines, some with the deleted expansion tank setup. if anyone can help with above thatd be great thanks |

Hello,
Get a new clean one and fit it. There are a number of reasons to keep it standard, a clean new one could be painted to match the car, with an area masked so you can see the coolant level after. Ford would not have fitted it if it wasnt needed. Plastic is light and cheap, but also an insulater. A cooling system wants to be a battery, and can work like electroplating in reverse. ( taking metal away from inside engine parts ) The Ford bottle will also purge air from the system, and keep the cooling system full of water. A simple change can cause problems later, and it is nice to be able to buy parts out of a box to fix a Car. Your choice as to what you do, I would leave it alone.

Ok is it possible to fit a au/ba expansion tank to a e series to make room for fitting a fusible link box from a au ba as want to fit one from a au ba to a e series to tidy it all up a bit and will have to fit a different header tank to make room for it. As said can a ba or au header tank be made to fit
And what do you then do about low coolant sensor |

Anything can be modified to fit, but how desperately do you want to clean things up?
Changing mounting points for a different header tank can make things messier too, whats wrong with the stock setup? FWIW, AU has a coolant level sensor in the V8's, if you get a Dayco replacement from Repco, the new tanks are drilled for a coolant level sensor, and you use a blanking cap if you dont have the sender where the Ford tanks are simply undrilled |

Anything is possible given sufficient application of time, effort and money.
Bigger issue with using the BA style fuse/relay box is there simply isnt the room, the header tank is right next to the battery, and if you want to have the fusebox in the same place as in a BA, you will need to relocate the header tank, and there isnt the room on top of the strut tower unlike a AU-BA You're going to make a bigger mess of things making room for the AU/BA header tank (remember, you wont get a header tank to radiator hose that will fit like it should, you will need to butcher one or two to gt everything extended and lined up, and then you have the wiring nightmare of adapting the AU-BA fusebox. Exactly what are you trying to achieve apart from to "tidy it up"..... the factory setup is neat enough, modifying any later model gear is going to take a LOT of effort to look right and not like a hatchet job. |
