Hi guys.

Can anyone give me some indication as to how hard it is to get the dash guages working if I carb an AU xr8 /6?

Cheers
Shaun

Extra info***

I've got a freshly rebuilt 351c dedicated gas sitting on a stand ready to go.

I could just buy an au xr8 ute but where is the fun in that.

I've currently got an xg Ute but I think the end product would be better with a xr au (obviously my personal opinion...)

Looking at a couple au utes, not too worried about the mechanical side of dropping the clev into the au, more wondering how to get the tach and a few extras working.

Speedo off the gearbox, I've got an oil pressure sensor, fuel I can work with (lpg tank with the correct ohms sender)

Thoughts?

Wiring diagrams?

Beers? :)

Tacho will be hard... It uses the VR crank sensor to count the missing tooth on the balancer... The PCM modifies this and then sends it to the Au cluster for needle movement... Maybe there is a "tach corrector" like there is a speed corrector... Then maybe you can use coil negative (you using coil and dizzy?) to drive the needle... Maybe coil negative will just be close enough...

The temp sensor is sent on the data line... You'll need the AU head sensor if possible screw into your 351 head... If drilling and taping a hole seems impossible or too hard, Grab an EL temp sensor and change the plug... It'll work with the AU PCM and the PCM will then continue to send the info to the cluster...

Volts do their own thing...

Fuel you have sorted...

Speedo is a transducer so you have that sorted...

Oil pressure is sorted...

That's all 6...

Use your starter wire as normal from the EEC computer... This way if someone tries to jump it without the key, it will lock the starter out on the third try... Use the power supply wire that feed the injectors to supply your LPG computer... This way if the PCM immobilises this then your LPG system will shut down (manual doesn't say what the PCM does to stall the engine, just that it stalls the engine, this wire may stay +ve even when immobilised)...

Food for thought...

Cheers,
Tim

Check the legality of fitting the 351 to the AU and also the issue of running Carb on a model that was injection only.

You may be required to get it engineered (engine).

Being on LPG you should be OK with emissions but it would pay to check this out first with the authorities as it may not pass for rego.

In NSW, I believe it would cause issues for the builder.

I emailed one of the local engineers over the weekend, hopefully he gets back to me soon enough.

If he is realistic it should be ok......

No ute came with the 220 kw engine. They stayed with the 200 when sedan went 220.

there are rumours that utes got the 220's- wasnt the rebel a 220? I certainly nearly picked up one at Auction 2 years ago.

As for Tach on the Dash - you should be able to drive the Tach line on the cluster with a (normal) tach interface. The AU EEC actually generates a Tach Signal, which is sent to the dash/tacho. I normally use this line for LPG Conversions....

The issue (may) be that the Cluster works out if its an i6 or V8 cluster from some of the DOL data. It should work, but it may need a corrector as the cluster may function as an i6 cluster

The cluster doesn't care how many cyls the engine has. The data stream to the cluster is a pure rpm signal that only the cluster recognises unfortunately. The best thing would be to use the EECV to run your Cleveland.
