Hi Everyone and all that read this thread...
I own a 2009 FG XR8 that has been serviced regularly (company beast) but have a noise that I can't seem to find answers for. To give you an idea on the noise that I hear... When just cruising there seems to be a "whirring sound" when the throttle is just touched to keep the current speed... It does seem to be louder when I have reached the appropriate speed (limit 110 but travelling a few few few km's over – the sound seems louder...) To start, here is what I have had looked at so far: 1. Diff... FORD removed the diff (out of warranty) and checked but found normal wear and tear. Replaced (but not sure). Cost $1400... 2. Power Steering. Seems like the last people who serviced/tuned and put the varies exhaust on the car thought that it might be the power steering pump that is making the noise... I have been told the steering is connected to the speed...So they flushed the power steering oil (which was dirty and old) and replaced and filled to appropriate levels... sound not so loud, but still there... 3. That's it so far, but not being a mechanic have no idea what else to consider... hole in any pipes... wheel bearings... fuel pump???? As previously mentioned, I have had the car recently tuned on a dyno (257.9kwrw) and variex exhaust system installed etc etc with all the trimmings! The noise of the exhaust seems to have dulled the sound, but the whirring still seems to be there... If you have any other suggestions that you may think apart from the diff, wheel noise and powersteering, would be interested to hear your thoughts! This car has only travelled 67Ks... Thanks! |

seems like you are unsure as wether its coming from the front or back.
were you there to see it tuned? if so did you hear the noise? if yes and no noise then front wheel bearing. to pick which one, while driving just lightly swerve from side to side and listen. if the noise gets louder/quieter it will be that.

Hi everyone, and thanks for responding.
In response to some questions... SemiAutomatic Sound seems to be more coming from the front Wasn't there when the car was on the dyno Will try driving side to side to see whether its the front wheel bearings but I am sure that the guys who tuned the car might have said something if it was the bearings. There is some tyre noise and I do have some diff noise as well... but its more the whirring. I was considering thinking about the power steering pump and maybe should I get that replaced...? The other service I was going to organise was getting the transmission serviced. I have heard that this should be done every 60,000km or so. So if you have any other ideas I can use to explain to the mechanic when I take my car for a service would greatly be appreciated. Thanks again |

Does it vary with engine speed or road speed?
The fact that there was no sound when the front wheels were stationary on the dyno points to a front end issue i.e. wheel bearings or tyres. Mike

G'day, did you ever find a solution or a cause of the whirring noise?
