If you're starting with the 4.0 which has a 3.91" stroke and 3.63" bore, you would have to decrease the stroke by 0.38" (3.53") to achieve a 3.6L displacement.
To decrease the stroke by 0.38", you would have to offset grind the crank by 0.19" (stroke = 2 x crank throw). You would then have to purchase rods with the big end 0.19" smaller in diameter than the stock 4.0 rod. Then to have the top of the piston be at the same spot at TDC (to maintain compression) the rod would have to be 0.19" longer than the stock 4.0, or the compression height of the piston would have to be 0.19" taller than the stock 4.0. Easy. Good luck.
