G'day folks,
Does anyone know if travelling hairline cracks can be fixed? Noticed yesterday a tiny crack appeared from the very top of the windscreen, thought some mongrel might have used a knife or something to scratch it. Whilst driving on a hot day I noticed the crack had slowly travelled. I placed my finger over the crack to feel if it was rough or smooth. It's very smooth. Can the crack be fixed or replace the laminated windscreen? Thanks |

You can get cracks repaired, O'brien Glass does repairs and there are mobile guys as well.
Example from the old Youtube https://youtu.be/0jr9Gojvt6E You could do self repair if you are confident RainX Repair Kit http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/Produc ... Then it's gone too far. Take it to a windscreen place to confirm, but I suspect you'll hear the same.
Normally if you need a rego inspection, the crack is defaulted if it's in the wiper arc.

snap0964,
I'm going to take the car to Novus Windscreens and see what they think of it. If it needs replacing then that's ok, unfortunately cant replace immediately due to financial constraints at this point in time. Far out, vehicle problems always (with me) happens at the inappropriate time. |

Well you probably don't have rego checks, so it gives you some time to shop around.
The crack will keep going - you can stop drill them, but it may branch crack anyway, and keep going. I've saved a reasonable amount previously by buying the windscreen separately and getting a windscreen place to fit, rather than them doing both. I've also removed and fitted one myself, it's not hard, but takes labour and not advisable if you're not confident in what you're doing. Being near a capital city, shouldn't be short of suppliers - check ebay as well.

Snap0964,
We do have random vehicle checks done by Scalies and Police. I've already done some shopping around so to speak and can get a screen supplied and fitted for $228.00 + $45.0o if new seal is required. Windscreen if fitted by a reputable installer, warranty will be given. Anything else I'm competent on but avoid windscreen. Had a bad experience in the past when a group of youths drove in opposite direction to my travel and thrown a rock at my windscreen, back then , different car, non laminated windscreen, bloody thing turned white and shattered, could not see, my partner and I was shattered with broken glass. New windscreen and glass still kept being found and dropping from behind dash. No probs, I'll be checking ebay too. Cheers |

Yes, I did search ebay after submitting the post.
I made contact with the supplier. The screen is cheap enough. |

Had my front windscreen removed, to my surprise the passenger side bottom section of the window was almost touching the lifting bracket of the bonnet.
I don't think that is normal. Had a fella to remove and reinstall the front windscreen. He has done plenty of Fords and mine was the first one he has come across that had the problem. Surely the windscreen would not have expanded. Just seems odd, drivers side is perfect but passenger's side was problematic. Windscreen came out but with breaks on passenger lower side. However, never had the opportunity to properly remove rust from top where windscreen sits. It could have done with a proper clean out of rust spots. |
