G'day guys I picked up an old 89 EA Falcon S Pack last weekend, it is a project car as I already have a BF, and I have very basic knowledge of engines and all but I'm 100% set on doing everything (that I have the tools to do) that gets done to this car but truth is I have no fkn clue where to start! my plan was to put a barra in it but I think that's way out of my league so basically I just want to clean it up like new, disinfect the grotty engine bay and get it nice and roadworthy. All that the owner said about the car is that he thinks the engine is trying to seize because it overheats and stalls when attempting to take off.
I've tried to take photo's but with my shaky hands it was hard to get my phone to focus I'll attach them anyway but bot the transmission oil and engine oil are a fair bit overfilled and the engine oil has a burnt smell to it. My big questions that are probably pretty dumb to you blokes are Is this engine worth fixing up? If it is where do I start? and again if it is, to clean it would I be best off just taking the engine out? even the loom and all connectors has a thick black slime around it. Hope it doesn't seem like I'm trying to get you's to do all the work for me I've been researching for months and have already learned heaps (I think) but still not enough to know where to begin haha. If you are going to degrease the engine, cover the Distributor with a heavy duty plastic bag so you don't screw the electricals.
How many klms has the eng done? I am guessing that this is a 4 speed auto? If so, I would dump the oil and buy a filter service kit and refill then see how it is. If the Engine has not been run for a while, I would not try to start it after you have changed the oil and filter instead, make it so the eng won't "start" and turn it over with the plugs out and a little squirt of oil down the plug holes to circulate the oil and get some in behind the rings. I would try this before deciding on what to do unless, when you take the plugs out, the plugs look clean, this could mean a blown head gasket and EA/EB/ED were renowned for that. Try these easy things and then see what you have. |

Cheers mate will try all of that it's got 285 on the clock, pulled the covers off the spark plugs and they look almost new, will get a photo later today after work but also the rubber seal on the rocker cover is cracked all around, I pulled the battery out my bf yesterday and tried starting it but just came up with brake fail. Auto but still not sure I'm assuming it's the 4 speed as well
When I picked it up I got there as the guy was spraying out the engine bay with a power washer so I'm hoping no damage was already done there |
