if its the same as an ef/ el they have a chip in the back that holds the memory of the odometer the only way that i know to swap the odo reading is to carefully remove this chip on both of them and put the chip from your old odometer reading into the new cluster and re solder back on, but you need to be gentle because if it gets too hot or damaged you will lose the odometer reading on it

i found this in the tech docos
Quote: Obviously, when swapping Instrument clusters, you will want to keep the same Odometer Readings for your vehicle.
Because the EF and EL series vehicles have a digital Odometer, simply cracking open, and winding the Odometer backwards will not work. So how is the Odometer reading changed ? Firstly, you will need to know a little bit about electronics. The Odometer Reading, as well as the Trip meter, Service spanner setting, and possibly other settings, are stored in a device known in the Electronics industry as an EEPROM, or E2PROM, (pronounced E squared Prom). An E2PROM is an Electrically Erasable, Electrically Programable, Read Only Memory, very similar to the Flash upgradable Computer Bios. Anyway, without boring you on how an E2PROM works, the model used in the VDO Instrument Clusters is an X24C44 Surface Mount model. As was previously mentioned, this chip is surface mounted, that is you will need special tools in order to remove it. It is this chip that stores the Odometer, as well as other readings. When swapping Instrument Clusters, you will need to De-Solder this chip, and swap it from your Original Instrument Cluster, to your new Instrument Cluster. WARNING : I take no responsibility for any Damage that may be caused through any actions that are taken, that are directly, or Indirectly related to the information provided herein ! This is a small, delicate, and heat sensitive chip, and as such, is very suceptable to permenant damage, which WILL if damaged, render the instrument cluster USELESS ! Under no circumstances will Matthew I Jones be held responsible for any such damage. Remember, this site is provided to you, free of charge, and it is up to yourself to correctly determine what modifications can be safely conducted by yourself !

Going Up is easy, Go to Jaycar and buy a frequency generator (square wave)
attach the output to the speedo input and crank it up to around 300kph. leave it for 72hours and you'll have 145k's

cheers guys for the info
i think ill just keep the odometer as is but while at work today i swapped over the clusters to check if it works good everything works great besides the right indercater and the when you turn the head lights on there is no back ground light ive checked and replaced all the globes but still nothing do i have to change the ecu and/or bcm to a medium/high series as the car is a series 3 gli six banger auto and im putting in a series 3 tickford cluster which came with the blue backing or is the dash f**k as im not to sure with the a series as im pretty sure the cluster should just be a plug an go item and i did make sure they are from the same year so there is not mistake between smart lock and smart shield

There are loom differences between low and mid series clusters.

the plugs are the same and everything works besides the right indercater and back ground lighting
surely they must be the same in low an mid series evrything else works even the PRND321 down the bottom surely someone else has swapped over the clusters from the one with just the fuel gauage, tacho and speed to a ticky with the two extra gauages with out having to change the whole wire loom over

documents.php?d=4 Wiring changes required when fitting a Mid/High Series Cluster to a Forte/Futura Model Falcon. Although the Mid and High Series Clusters will simply plug in, and A L M O S T function, there a re a few changes you will need to make, in order to get the Cluster to function correctly. These changes are needed in order for the following to function, •Dial Illumination with Park Lamps On •The ABS Warning Lamp to Illuminate correctly •The Right Hand Side Indicator Lamp to function Correctly The following wires need to be moved around, in order for the Mid/High Cluster to function correctly, •1. The Park Lamp Dial (+ Positive) Illumination needs to be moved from Pin 13 to Pin 2. •2. The Dial Negative Dimmer Illumination needs to be moved from Pin 21 to Pin 3. •3. The ABS Warning Lamp Wire needs to be moved from Pin 8 to Pin 23 •4. The R.H. Side Indicator wire needs to be moved from Pin 19 to Pin 26 Please Note : In addition to these changes, you will need to also change the Oil Warning Switch, to an Oil Pressure sender unit, and also swap the Odo Reading. (See Below for further details on how to do this)

Side Indicator wire needs to be moved from Pin 19 to Pin 26 dose that mean i swap pin 19 with pin 26 or do i place pin 19 to where pin 26 is and no longer use pin 26

Hi, I have done the same mod myself with a series 2 xr cluster and rather than cutting any wires I have spliced a wire with the wire needing to be moved and soldered a connection to the other end so it will fit the desired pin, that way it is a simple task to refit the original cluster if desired, cheers. P.S I am not sure if the series 3 xr cluster can be fitted.

Sorry to interrupt your thread but anyone who wants a cluster correction they can be done for about $100 and you have to sign a document confirming your not falsifying the km. You can pm me for more details.

You can pm me for more details. It's been some years, but where are you located? I have 10/1996 XH Longreach. Looking to put an EL OPT20 dash in it. First, does it fit straight in? I read about changing wires around etc, would this be same for OPT20? My ute has 165xxx Kms, this OPT20 dash has 290XXX... Would love a wind back!
