Well, went to change the starter motor today. Fiddling around trying to get the top bolt in and it slipped out of my fingers. Straight into the bell housing. I heard a clank and rattle but no thud as it hit the ground. Fiddled with a magnet for hours to no avail. Now just sitting, drinking and cursing myself.
Tow truck to the mechanic tomorrow. $100 fix just skyrocketed.
