Hi All,
My Name Is Dave, And Thought Someone May Be Able To Help Me With My Issues.
My Car Is A 2001 Series 2, Au Xr8 Tickford Ute, 5 Litre.
The Cars Symtoms, Is Severe Vibration Into The Cabin At Revs Between 1100 And 1400, Or At Speed Between 40 And 60 Kph, It Is Also Present In Park.
Out Side Of These Rev Ranges, The Vibration Disappears.
I Have Checked And Corrected The Following,
Compression Test, All Cylinders Within 10 Psi From 160 To 170, This Was Done To Eliminate Possible Exhaust Valve Fault.
Resistant Check On All Leads, Coil Packs, All Good. Changed All Plugs, Old Plugs Were In Good Nick.
Found Gearbox Mount Loose, Retightened.
Found Left Front Engine Mount Collapsed, Replaced.
Vibration Is Now Worse Than Before Mount Was Changed.
Have Moved Torque Converter Away From Engine And Ran Engine, Vibration Still Present In Engine, Gearbox Eliminated As Possible Vibration Cause.
My Next Easy Option Is To Change The Harmonic Balancer, This Is Where I Am At.

Any Suggestions Or Advise Would Be Well Recieved,
Thanks,
Dave. :?:

Resurrecting this thread ladies and gents. I have a similar issue (among many) with my project AU XR8.

Similar vibration at those above REVS, especially under light throttle or when slowing down (engine deccel, no throttle).

It's the same issue when in neutral or at idle.

The engine feels rock solid on its mounts. I haven't taken the gearbox off yet. I'm thinking either harmonic balancer or torque converter.

How would I tell the difference between the two?

The issue seems to go away under higher REVS/full throttle.

Cheers.

with balancer ... check rubber hasn't perished/cracked/falling out between inner/outer steel sections of balancer. can also check by trying the fan belt & see if you can make the balancer rotate by pulling fan belt.

the v8 is different to the 6cyl, the pully on the v8 is solid and part of the centre and the balancer counterweight sits behind the pulley..

on the v8 the best way to tell is look if the counterweight wobbles when the engine is idling, you cant see the rubber in between the balancer and pulley..

the balancer would most likely be the issue, here is pics of one i just changed, pretty annoyed it failed after only 12 months but was replaced under warenty..

no gap between pully and counterweight .

Cheers guys, I'll have a look.

I would much rather the issue be the harmonic balancer than the torque converter, in terms of cost of parts and also labor.

I need to get onto the power steering pump as well as one of the other pulleys too, too much squealing and squeaking coming off the accessories on the front of the motor.

I have the same problem, nasty vibration at around 1300, really annoying because thats exactly where the revs sit cruising at 60..

Already have the balancer to replace it with, just need to borrow a puller..

Any tips for the job?

Do I have to remove the radiator or can I get enough room with just the fans out?

Also can I slip it on as far as I can push it and do it up the rest of the way steady with the bolt? (making sure the key lines up of course)

dont need to take radiator out, just the fans.
you can just push it on as far as you can and as long as there is a reasonable amount of thread you can just tighten it to pull it the rest of the way on.

i do however put a little bit of rtv in the keyway groove to prevent any oil seeping through the keyway, had a little bit of oil seeping through mine before changing it.

Cool, sounds as easy as others I have done.

Good tip with the RTV too..

Cheers.

I had the same. It was the balancer. It's not a hard job ;)
