I know the two bolts holding them in are made to be tamper proof but how exactly do they come off??

You want to get the whole ignition barrel off?
Well there are two bolts on the top that have no heads. You get a hammer and a punch. You tap an indent on the top of the bolt and then put the punch on an angle and tap in an counter-clockwise direction. Get one of them about 2 turns around then do the other for a few more then it should be finger tight. The other method of doing this is by getting a dremal and tring to get a cutting blade in there and make a canal for a flat blade screw driver and use a big screw driver to undo it. What exactly do you want to take it off for?

Sometimes they cooperate and a few taps and they are loose, and sometimes they can be as tight as f**k and you end up smashing the thing to bits. Good luck! The bolt is real soft metal too so it doesnt take much to wreck it.

i am in the same boat.... or EF.. so the 2 bolts that have no groove or anything. are you able to buy new bolts for the replacement of this. because i took it to a auto elec and well that was like 2yrs ago and now i am back in the spot the barrel is cactus and i am going to do it myself. (the key is hard as to turn and you also have to giggle the key and sometimes you have to just wait and then try again b4 you get it going again.
could i even use easy outs...... any1 got picts to help me through Cheers Den

You can use 2 x M8 x 1.25mm Allen Socket cap screws, about 15mm long.

I know this subject is a little old.
To remove the screws with the snapped off heads (the smooth head) I hit in the centre with a centre punch, then drilled a small hole and put in an easy-out. I then replaced them with high tensile allen head screws from bunnings. However thanks for the clue to swapping the barrel over. |
