Hi guys I have noticed a leak from the front of the engine where the bottom of the rocker cover is. Is this gasket easy enough to change and do I have to re-tighten the bolts at a specific tension or just by feel?

Thanks guys

Easy enough to do yourself. I have never tightened them to a specific torque setting, however I think you are meant to according to the workshop manual. I just tighten it tight, but not too tight because you are tightening into an alloy thread.

Just buy a new rubber gasket, for safety measure you can put extra gasket maker goo on the half moons on front and back of the cover and tighten it all up, however it is not necessary.

Should be easy enough as phongus said. My XG leaked in the exact same spot as yours, took me half an hour and i had no dramas what so ever changing the gasket myself and it was the first time I'd ever changed a gasket.

thanks for that guys, so pretty much remove the old gasket and scrape any excess rubber stuck to the motor, and then just put the new one on and tighten?

and yes... its just called a rocker cover gasket or valve cover gasket. Just scrape any excess rubber off and on with the new one...

Pretty much, just have to perfect your ability to clear the rocker assembly when removing and installing the rocker cover on the back of the engine. It's just a nuisance when you accidentally clip the rocker pedestal and dislodge the rubber gasket from the rocker groove. Then you have to fiddle around trying to get it back in the groove. You'll understand what I'm talking about when you pull the rocker cover off :). It is nothing major though, just something annoying after a long hard days work.

haha. Dislodging the gasket really gets frustrating when it happens three times in a row lol. Did that happen to you as well phongus?

You need to make sure the rocker cover is clean and dry, NO oil residue, water, etc.
Also, replace the 4 rubber gromets on the rocker cover retaining bolts.....these are what applies the sealing pressure onto the seal.
You can tighten the bolts as hard as you like, BUT, you will not apply anymore pressure to the gasket.
The bolts have a crush tube, so tightening the bolts overly does nothing.

I had a leak on my NL in the font halfmoon spot and doubtless the back aswell but when I got a permaseal gasket from Ripco RC0015K the gasket seems to be oversized IE it has suplus rubber the overhangs the grove and bulges out. Anyone else had this problem? If I can find the right seal I might pop some silicone in the half moons like someone posted in this thread.

I've had the same issue with the Permaseal Rocker Cover gaskets! It's a pain in the a***, the last one I did I spent quite a bit of time massaging it into place where it wouldn't pinch. I also put some gasket sealer on the rocker cover side of the gasket to help 'stick' the back of the gasket into the rocker cover so it didn't fall off when reinstalling it.

I've also purchased permaseal crank seals which had the genuine Ford part number on them so I would assume they used to make the gaskets for Ford???
