My ford is stuck in reverse gear when I went to reverse out and now will not go back into any other gear. Even when gear shift is placed in park the car still reverses. I've turned the ignition off & now can't turn it back on. Can it be fixed at home or does it need to go to a mechanic workshop?

first off you need to workout what the the problem is!. if you can jack the car up so you can have a look from the passenger side to the gearbox - specifically the side of the box where the selector cable hooks up to the box. it sorta sounds like the cable end has fallen off the selector rod that's on the side of the box. have a look there & if it has come off you 'maybe able' to cable tie back on temporarily till you get a replacement bush.i haven't had this problem yet [cross fingers] & it's what i've heard happens. it can also come off at the console selector end as well altho 99% of the time everyone has the problem at the gearbox end.

Thanks so much for the info. Will see if we can get it up on ramps & take a look. May even leave it for a legit mechanic to fix.
