Hey i wanted to put a 4 speed automatic into my EA Fairmont Ghia 1989. Currently it has a 3 speed automatic as EA series I have. I wanted to either get a 4 speed automatic fitted in or a manual transmission.

Is it going to be hard to put in a 4 speed auto or a manual? and which is better considering costs. Ive read something about 4 speed being electronic and 3 speed non-electronic. was hoping to get a better understanding of the transmission before i get anything changed.

it would also be helpful if a prize range can be giving including installation and transmission costs. thanks all

i'd go for the manual, cos if you want the 4 speed auto, you're gonna need the EAII's seperate gearbox ECU, as well as the rest of the loom

when i got the car the person that had it change it, im pritty shore that it cost him under $900. not sore, but if you use good second hand part and do some of the work your self it shouldn't be all that mutch.

I converted my EA Ghia from 3speed auto to 4 speed and changed to a 3.23 diff at the same time, it iis possible its not all that hard.

Main points are:

You need to either change all your wiring and then plug the trans ecu in, or do what I did, run a spererate loom integrated back in to the exisiting loom and add the trans ECU that way. (I have an excel spreadsheet for the wiring of this)

The gearbox mounting points are all wrong and you need to make up some 'z' brackets to extend the mount points ny about 3-4inches (although I have heard that a 5 speed 'U' shaped trans mount works, but cant confirm)

You need to cut the passenger mount point closer back towards the mount bolt as it is too wide for the gearbox to fit with acceptable clearance.

The exhuast mountpoint will no longer line up either and will need to get fixed later also.

I think thats about it, all in all pretty easy now I know whats involved.

how much would the 3.23 diff cost? cause i was going to get manual instead of auto but then again i dun have a manual license until im on my full which is another year. hopefully by then i have enough money to do most if not all of the upgrades to my car.

considering i like to drive manual id get the 5 speed manual, but im not too sure if its worth it compared to a 4 speed auto. In the end ill probbaly end up with a 5 speed manual and 1500 bux less in my pocket.

thanks all

While on the subject of 4 speed autos has anyone heard of the overdrive module that fits on the back ot some 3 speed autos that VPW sells? Aparently its a constant mesh switchable adapter that gives a 20% overdrive. The principle behind it is that once your in 3rd just pull a lever to engage in overdrive and whalla! 4th gear. Aparently it can hold up to 500lbs/ft of torque which is quite alot.

This actually looks easier than a conversion to manual transmission. It fits onto the back of your gearbox and is operated by a remote lever or ratchet. No power leads going anywhere. Depending on the price it may seem like a viable alternative. The only question would be since its got 20% overdrive would that mean that the ratio now becomes 0.8:1 instead of 1:1? Sounds a bit to short.

i wouldn't have a clue, but id rather get a manual even if it costs more, since its more fun to drive as well as better control. i dun like my 3 speed. seems tooo slow, i want to change it. but no money :(
