Not all 96DA heads are hybrids and as mentioned earlier the AU's had a WR part number. The simplest way to check is to look at the rocker gear, If the IN and EX rockers look the same then its an AU rocker set but if they are different ( I think its the inlet HLA that is off set ) then they are E series rockers. The cams on EF/EL's ran a ~52mm base circle dia where as AU's ran ~48mm. Your problem is the head bolts I would assume, the aftermarket ones when fitted to my EF were just a little too big and hence loosing oil pressure at the HLA's. I filled out a little of the metal on the rocker towers where it goes around the head bolts and this fixed the problem. My oppinion of the AU heads is pretty poor. They run a much smaller intake port diameter and have absolutely no port bowl. They gooseneck down around the short side and need a lot of work to clean them up. I now understand from inspecting both and porting out an AU head why JMM preffer E series. The AU heads were more intended for the fuel concious driver who uses more of the bottem end of the rev range, and by having smaller ports it keeps your gas speed up at low RPM. AU's also have a swirl fin shrouding the intake valve much like the EA's which also requires removal if you plan do do any work as the tips of the fins tend to cause detonation if you shave the head, and they also shroud 2/3 of the valve. If you have the option buy an E series head and with a mild port job it will flow like a big port AU will.

I've read a few articals on the AU heads not flowing as well as E series. I would gather you are correct on the better fuel economy.
But in performace on a stock mtr there would be no difference really a ( e.g )was at a Au dyno day 5 out 6 N/A au's ran over 120rwk compared to 1 out of 6 N/A E series running over the 120rwk with simular mods. I persanally think there is no real advantage in between the heads. You would get more out of a good exhaust system. ghiaman |

I definately have an EL Motor in my EL as I went and checked my HEAD..... and yes it is still screwed on for all you smartasses. HaHaHa. Anyway it says on the front of the Head 95AA. Next question is their is a number to the bottom left of it which says,"10" what does that mean

Thanks for the replies. According to Just Fords the problem is that the car is a "1994 model", they are going to send the correct rocker gear for that head, we will see how we go then.
If there is a head bolt problem then they are going to know about it - they were told it was for a 1994 EF. If it helps, the head has tapered valve springs, whereas the original heads did not (i.e. valve springs same as an EB). |

Its definetaly an AU head then. I take back my comment on 96DA heads as I double checked the EL head that I have and it is in fact a 95AA, so Im not entirely sure about em.

As I said, 95Ax heads are for the EL's, and they changed to 96Dx for the hybrids (AU heads), before they went to the WR2x AU type part numbering. |

No problems Jaysen, I dont know a hell of alot about these, hence the reason I asked.

Got the new cam and rocker assembly and fitted them the other day. It all seemed nice and tight until one of the rocker arms snapped - seems that Just Fords sent me the identical cam to the one that I had before with the newer rocker gear. They now want to argue that they supplied an EF head as requested.
My opinion - Just Fords is a joke - they cant supply correct parts. Looks like Fair Trading might have to get involved |

Sounds like you are trying to use a 94Dx cam with the AU rocker gear. A situation I'm all too familiar with.
I'd give the poor blokes a go. As I said before, there are very few people and even fewer wreckers know what a hybid head is, and how to identify it and what the differences are. As far as they are concerned they supplied you with an head off an EL, which they believed are the same as an EF (which is technically correct). So I'm sure they can't see the problem. Much the same as you accepted the head as being one suited to an EF. How are they, as you, really supposed to know the differences on what is a rare kind of engine. |

arm,
That is true, but when I request an AU cam and rocker assembly - I expect to get an AU cam and rocker assembly, not a EF cam with an AU rocker set. The other thing is, I dont expect to be told that "the cam is an AU cam" when it is stamped 94xA. I also dont expect that if they dont know what the head is to be told "we rang Ford and they told us it is a EFII head". It is getting to the point where it is probably cheaper and easier to get a wreck from the auctions in Sydney and do an engine swap |

Sorry there mate. I jumped the gun and didn't realise you specifically asked them for an AU cam with AU rocker gear. In which case, yes, they should be shot.
I hope in the end you do get the right cam. As for an engine swap, I've seen these kind of things turn alot more nasty than just some arguments and a broken rocker. At least you know what the engine is, and what is going in there. It should be a wreckers business to understand exactly what works in what car, specially when they are specialising in a particular make. But unfortunately, it doesn't always work that way. |
