Is there much difference in water pump brands? Any recommendations?

GMB jap made ones are good. Just don't buy W/P made in India.
When I managed the import division of Repco (1991-1997) there was heaps of come backs on Indian water pumps they sourced at cheaper prices. ghiaman |

i know this wont help but ill mention it anyway but i bought a waterpump for my ed about 2 weeks ago from burson's for $45. dont know where they were made or how good they are. its doin its job though and its not leaking anywhere so thats a good sign (for now anyway)

i bought one from autobahn for about $65 to replace the year old one from repco and autobahn give 2 year warrenty which is what i like.

I dunno if it's true or not, but I've heard the only ones worth buying are Ford Genuine ones.

Only buy the genuine ford water pumps.
They have larger, stronger fins, and sometimes more fins, to push the water around the block. Which in the end keeps the engine a little cooler. I've got an aftermarket pump in my EL now, and it doesnt keep the car as cool as the factory pump did. |

Original ford pump is around 150, I got the power max for under $40. The way I see it, I could replace the pump three times and still have some dosh left over.
WIth regards to cooling, I would have thought this is regulated by the thermistat... |

the power max has diecast fins, I have noticed some have a pressed sheet metal style. Haven't pulled the original off yet, but does anyone know what style it uses?

Its up to the pump to push the hot water as quickly as possible out of the engine to get cooled. If the fins are smaller, it is not pushing as much water, so the overall temp may go up further. I have noticed in hotter weather, hill climbs, where I am pushing the car, the temp seems to go up more and vary much more than the original pump, where the temp didnt vary at all. Did the same with my XF as it does with my EL, so there is something too it. Genuine pumps are less than that. They are cast. Compare the size of the vane and thickness of the fins when you pull the original pump off. |

Thanks arm79, I bit the bullet and went original. I think you were right on. Once i pulled my original off I saw the difference straght away. The original has curved fins which would push the water outwards, the powermax had straight fins which, by guessing again, would cause more of a turbulant flow. Can get some photos going if anyone else is interested

And to think some people think I am stupid... lol...
I know the OE water pumps can be comparitively expensive, but considering how important cooling is in an I6, its worth every cent. Compared to what could happen should a cheaper pump fail to do a proper job. I realise people have a budget to stick to alot of the times, but sometimes Ford really do do things right. Did you also notice if the depth of the vane to the body of the pump is a few mm wider as well. The factory pump just pushes so much more water compared to an aftermarket pump. |

Does the genuine pump come with a new drive pully fitted?

no I had to put a pulley on myself. I bought a new steel one for $20.00.
