Hey all,
Just last night my car has started making a really weird sound from (I think) the front left. It almost sounds like my old power steering pulley when the bearings went, Im not ruling the bearings out for now but the sound seems to be coming only from the front left wheel not the bonnet. It seems to kick it only at about 60 km/h and not before, if i slow down under 60 it goes away but its loud and VERY annoying (Also not good for street cred), im afraid it might lead on to worse problems. Dont want to be heading down the highway at 90 and have the wheel fall off .... I got my dad in the car to get him to listen to it and see if we could figure it out, my dad is a heavy set guy, the sound didnt happen at all in the 5 mins i was driving around (Last night it wouldnt stop) which makes me think it could be something to do with the suspension components in the front left. But overall, I have no idea .... Anyone know what it could be ?? My mate said it sounds the same as his laser when the CV's went, but obviously I dont have CV's... |

Sounds like it!! I'd be pulling the hub off to check the bearings ASAP... Last thing you want is a wheel falling off and no brakes!!!

Is it safe to drive ??
Its gotta go down to the panel beaters/mechanic's tomorow to have the front right quarterpanel replaced and all resprayed so I'd rather ask them to have a look at it and see whats wrong. If i pull the wheel off now and it falls apart im stuffed at this stage. |

mm Im not convinced its the bearings now really ...
Drove it to the panel beaters this morning and the sound didnt start for about 5 k's and only after i put my foot on the brake, then it went away shortly after. Then it came on with brake application twice more. I just did my brake pads last saturday, even tho i havent noticed anything wrong with it it MUST have something to do with that. Any other ideas ? |

Wheel bearings sound likely - maybe add a healthy dose of grease.
Done any work to your brakes recently? Perhaps a brake pad is slightly touching or the calipar might be sticking/not releasing all the way?

replaced the pads last weekend and then the noise started...

Pop the wheel off, inspect the pads and see how far they are sitting off the disc. Those pistons in the calipars might not be moving freely or indeed all the way in and out.

Update:
Just got car back from the panel beaters, new front right quarter and shiny new mettalic paint job on the front (looks smick). They had to replace the front right tyre and do a wheel alignment, sound has mysteriously dissapeared ... Not complaining - Except the quality of work leaves something to be desired, like quality.... and now my main belt is squeeking around the power steering pump pulley. |

This sounds like the same set of circumstances that has lead to my EB Fairmont Ghia getting a squeak in its rear wheel. New pads and calipers then the squeak, which disappears everytime I take the wheel off and clean all the bits and pieces behind the wheel.
My squeak, however returns at the slightest hint of water - ie car washing or rain and then it remains until I wash behind the wheel - damned annoying I might try something like you have had done minus the panel repair |

Yeah definately sounds like the wheel bearings
Especially in the EF/EL in the front left wheel which you cant do too much about. The moan is annoying

Well if its squeaky brakes (I used to get them on my old XE) I fixed 'em with a dob of silicon gasket goo.. Just wipe a small amount on the back of the pads that contact the caliper. Should quiet down the brakes anyway. You can get special orange stuff for brakes but normal gasket silicon does the same thing (just make sure it's Non-Acetic or Neutral Cure).
