Hey, dad was trying to get the head off a eb 6 the oher day and managed to round one of the headbolts something terrible. Is there any way of getting it out without doing any damage to the head or block? We thought about welding another nut to the top but dont know whether it will be strong enough because of how tight the head bolts are. Any help would be much appreciated

the easiest way i can think of is to go buy one of those special spanners that can remove rounded bolts, for one of these you might need to do some dcalling to local hardware and auto outlets, also try danoz direct (sounds stupid, but im pretty sure they sell them). dont know about welding it, might work.

Yep, Snap-On call them Flank Drive sockets. Metrinch also make them.

or get a thin grinding wheel for ya angle grinder,,grind the middle out of the bolt and use a chisel and 2 pound hammer,,i did this with three stuck head bolts,,had all three out in half an hour,,oh and don't forget to remove the valve gear first

Welding a Nut to it will work fine, you wont bust that off in a hurry, do it slow and DO NOT over heat the bolt. Or go the rounded nut spanner option.. F**K i need another beer.

Get a good size hammer and slowly hammer on a 13 MM socket that you wont use again.
Also use a proper breaker bar to get them loose.

Thats also the way to get locknuts off your car (or someone elses) if you can't find the bit, you buy the socket 1 size smaller and hammer it on. the socket will bend over the bigger nut and voila! Nut with a socket over it, then use a big knuckle bar.

May not always work but. Try a pipe wrench (in the pic above) or a stihlson. The stihlson would probably work better but it depends how much room you have. If not, welding a nut to the top would be a good idea, but make sure it isnt the same size. otherwise the two bolts will fight each other on the same thread. So get something fairly large. it will also be harder to strip a larger nut. Yet another option would be to use a large stud extractor, and put it over the bolt itself. Dunno how successful that would be but?

I seem to remember a thread on another forum with this guy with the same issue on his tractor, I think the consensus then was to bang the stud a few times on the head of the bolt to break the bond, then heat the bolt a little and use a 6 sided socket to remove the bolt.

most imporant part make sure to put the new headbolt sin properly and dont round them off when you tighten them lol
