The easiest thing to do before visiting the wreckers is to undo the phillips head screw at the bottom of the dash, drop the BEM, unplug and check the connectors, then reconnect, try to start the car as is, if probs exist, have a wiggle of the wire looms. If you have to get a replacement, ensure it is for an EL (EF's have different plugs), and make sure it is for a Fairmont/Fairmont Ghia - should be green IIRC. You'll also have to "retrain" the replacement - see the doco for more info.
