Hi Guys,
only new to the site & wow what a great site i have a problem with my EF Futura yesterday i decided to clean out the throttle body etc after cleaning all part & reassembling the car won't start now checked all connections & everything seems fine, if either the idle speed control or the throttle position sensors aren't working should it still start?? turns over fine & sounds like it is firing ok but just wont run i did also degrease the front of the engine, have checked the map sensor to make sure no water in it & it was fine also not sure what to do next any help will be awesome Thanks Mistymtn |

Hi,
Welcome to Fordmods The car should start and run (albeit very rough) without the TPS and/or IAC connected, and it will even run without the MAP (it will however blow clouds of black smoke!) I'd suggest pulling the lead of spark plug #1, ground it and see if it sparks. If it doesnt you may have buggered the Crank Angle Sensor on the front of the engine (sits just above the crank pulley) This sensor is critical for ignition timing and the car wont fire without it operating correctly.

I assume that when you said you degreased the front of the engine you mean around the crank area etc., If so then there may be a bit of grit or other problems with your crank angle sensor.Get a air nozzle and blow it dry and clean.

The problem has been located.. when trying to undo the crank he managed to snap one of the teeth of the 36-1 crank trigger wheel
Theres now a post RE this in the 6cyl forum for anyone who wants to follow it.

some good news guys
got the balancer off thank to you guys another small problem though after replacing the balancer with a new one put everything back together it starts & runs fine but when i drive it it doesn't change gears until it hits around 3500rpm in each gear & changes hard, you can also feel it kick back down a gear when stopping. is this Limp mode??? or have just knocked something?? i did clean the throttle body out & did have both sensors off the throttle body when i cleaned it if limp mode how do i get it back to normal thanks for all your help guys Cheers Mistymtn |

I'd double check the TPS.
The TPS is critical for the ECU to determine shift patterns. If it thinks your at 90% throttle when youre only at 10% it will shift alot later than expected. They should read 1V closed 5V open from memory.

There are 3 wires on the back of the TPS. One will be GND (probably back and 0 resistance to ground! ) one is 5V reference (should read 5V in relation to ground) and the 3rd is the signal return to the ECU, which should read from 1V - 5V when measured against Ground and depending on throttle position.
Get a multimeter across it and open the throttle and you should see the voltage rise in relation to the throttle position, you shouldnt see any sharp spikes or jumps, it should be a smooth progession to 5V.
