having a look at my XF's AFM, it occurs to me that if i turn the wheel that the AFM's flap spring is held by, the spring will tighten a bit (if i move the wheel a notch at a time) and therefore it will overcome the natural loss of tension in the spring..... right?

which in theory will bring the air/fuel ratio's down to a more sensible level...... weaker spring=flap moves more, fooling the comp into letting more air through than the actual amount=more fuel=richer air/fuel ratio....

tighten the spring a little=brings the actual airflow closer tot hat percieved by the afm, which brings the air/fuel ratio's back to sensible levels..... right?

Good theory, but I am pretty sure that it won't work, as it actually reads how far open the flap is with a metal strip under/above the flap that works like a variable resistor telling the computer how much air is passing.

yea, but what i'm getting at is that the weaker spring will be allowing the flap to open further than it should, and tightning the spring will bring the flap back to where it should be at a given flow rate....

I am fairly sure that if it opens further it the tells the ecu via the variable resistor and then injects more fuel, and opposite happens when flap is closed further. So therefore a weaker/stronger spring would either allow the flap to move more freely or less.

Wouldnt replacing the spring with a new one, set to normal position be better? Sets it back to standard and reduces some of the guess work. A spring cant be that expensive

mattronics: thats the idea, i suspect the spring has lost some of its tension in the last 20 years or so
andrewJ: they arent allways dear, but finding one the right size and tension are another thing

tHE Spring can be played with a little if hooked up to an accurate 4gas meter and this can help to set up the system particularly with a different camshaft 8-) 8-)

Yes that will work interceptor.
Of course a MAF conversion will be better.
You can do it either with a V8 MAF/TwEECer or use a Mustang 3.8L V6 EEC.
