i was going through a CAPA catalogue i picked up from autobarn, and i noticed 'engine oil cooler kits' just wondering what advantages these have (if any).
its just that i thought oil was designed to get hot??

to a point.. but if it gets hotter then its nominal operating temperature it thins out more, vice versa also applys (colder = thicker). They put all sorts of additives to modify this (viscosity), that's why it's important to get the right oil type for your car, so it stays the right viscosity...
My guess is that an "engine oil cooler" would really only be useful in a VERY high stress engine, i.e. endurance racing, rallying.. And could be possibly be detrimental in any other car, preventing the oil from meeting nominal temp range..

completely off topic, my job involves the same modification of viscosity, except with vegetable oils...

I have one fitted to my exa turbo as it used to run about 15 psi and got hot, also fitted an alloy radiator. Dad used to fit them to his fully worked austin healy sprites to keep the temps down, but that was for the track.
Cheers. Dave. |

I did not know that... learn something everyday. mk1, Sprites are british, which means they have inherent cooling problems... My old mans got one as well.

Rotary engines also keen on oil coolers...

I wonder why the 5.6 windsor stroker ran one? it wasn't exactly a high revving engine was it? and the long stroke would have meant low piston speeds anyway...

yer i know.. umm if i can find my blueprint mag i will post up why... but next time u see 1 have a look through the top grill and u can see it there with the adding of the oil cooler the T3 strokers need a "stubby" oil filter as well
