I'm doing a clutch change at the moment, and I have come across this:
Do I put it back in like that or should I replace it. |

I dont know what that is but it looks very worn.
If in doubt chuck it out. |

LOL, couldnt find one in good nick - so I just re-used it.
On the upside car is going like a dream, new clutch grips perfectly and is so bloody light. |

I figured out what it is the input shaft to the gearbox/clutch?

Yep, thats the input shaft, but the thing that is all ground down is sort of a cover that goes around it.

HA HA, that is gold... I dunno what the technical term for the "thingy that sheaths the input shaft" is, but I guess a worn couldn't be too harmful.. For future reference though, live by Timmeh's rule

Is that seperate from the gearbox housing? If so I would replace it. Before that I would want to know why it is so worn. I realise the thrust bearing runs up and down on it but it shouldn't be wearing it out like that

IIRC it's the input shaft bearing retainer/thrust bearing carrier.... and by the look of it, you've had some serious issues there.... i hope you replaced the thrust bearing? IMO it'd be a good idea to replace the input shaft bearing retainer/thrust bearing carrier..... they're annoyingly noisy when they crack

Couldn't find a replacement, so just put it back in. Sick of the car off the road.

Looks like you're up for another G/box removal/install - that input shaft bearing retainer certainly needs replacing. Looks like the thrust bearing has been spinning freely on it, as like the bearing and bearing housing are seized together. This spinning will be happening when you change gears, or just have the clutch pedal depressed. Normally only the bearing will be spinning. This could mean that the thrust bearing may be wearing a nice ring in the pressure plate fingers as well, probably won't be that bad. Your throwout lever might have a bit of wear also.
IIRC, you've only just got a auto to manual conversion a few months ago, so if this wear has only happened over that period, it certainly needs prompt attention.

I put in a new throwout bearing that come with the clutch kit so it's quite possible I wont see anymore wear - I hope.
The fingers on the old clutch look fine too, so I don't think thats a problem. I would like to change it over though, gearbox remove/install is a peice of piss really so if I can find one I'll do it. Just a matter of where though. |

No, you should be okay - Was the old throwout bearing seized ?? voxace wrote: I would like to change it over though, gearbox remove/install is a peice of piss really so if I can find one I'll do it. Just a matter of where though. Yeah, I'd say your only likely source might be a trashed box - wreckers would be loath to separate G/box bits, they'd only shift them as complete units.

Nah the old bearing wasn't seized, but you have to remember the whole clutch fork was loose for about the last month from when the pivot bolt fell out. I'd say this allowed much more movement then usual, and is what caused the wear.

Fair enough.
