Hey all,
My brakes stopped working this afternoon. You hit the pedal and its hard as a rock, does not move at all... Ive had the ABS check light on for a while now, and was wondering if I disconnect the wires to the ABS will the brakes still function? assuming they were working in the first place (not like mine right now). The booster has vaccum, the pads are the right ones... I cant think of what else might have caused it, worked fine 2hrs prior. Help me...

the ABS has nothign to do with the brakes application ie the abs can s**t itself and the car will still stop... the only thing is you will not have abs... hit the pedal hard teh brakes will lock up. when you put pressure on the pedal does it slow the car down?

fluid is full, if there was no fluid the pedal would drop to the floor with no resistance

If the brakes still work but the peddle is just really stiff then even though you might have vacuum to it, sounds like the booster has dropped its guts.
As Disco Frank said the ABS won't change anything other than being able to lock the brakes. Pull the Vacuum line off the booster and if it makes no difference then thats probably the prob..

yeh as a matter of interest aswel...
the reason for your abs check light coming on(means that abs has switched itself off) may just be that one of the wires for a front sensor has hit the exhaust(easier on 8s coz theres exhaust on either side).. same happens if you just unplug a sensor.. as far as the pedal goin stiff.. i dunno. sounds about right that theres no vaccum. pull the vacuum hose off the booster and listen to it.. if its sucking in air then its likely to be the booster itself. (rebuilt ones cost 100ish) funnily enough i had a booster(v8/xr6 one) crap itself and what that did was make the pedal go straight to the floor! but i think thats coz its a different design to the stock 6 one. i.e. whether its a twin or single diaphram. jamie.

yeh like NFGhia mentioned it sounds like your booster has seized, but before you remove it, check/replace the vacum hose. if that dont work you can pull the bosster apart and check/clean/replace as nessesary

End Result - Brake Booster was cracked at the housing, seems like a common occurance according to the shop. New one is in and I need to get used to the brakes again, touch them and your head goes flying forward. It appears its been that way for a while now...

mine split about a year ago, on the side.
they're not that expensive to replace.
