if the shifter gate, or pin is worn enough it can and will inadvertently get knocked (or youll go past it as andrew J did), im talking about some kind of electrical/mechanical lockout that in the event of it going into R or P the box will simply NOT do anything. (like how you cant put it into 1st above a certain speed)

When i took my EL XR6 (previous car) for a test-drive i was stuffing around with the gears and accidentally (dont know how) shifted into reverse while doing about 80km/h, got sideways in peak-hour traffic and stalled  !

no, my mate chucked it into reverse in my old commodore going 120kmh, diff locked up and car went off the road and hit a tree side on with 5 of us in the car.

also my ea trans used to do what yours done, i topped up the trans fluid and it was sweet afterwards.

I had the same problem once, was banging into neutrol reving to about 5 grand then slaming back into gear. This mainly occured around corners.

Problem turned out to be low on tranny fluid.

So there is a mechanical element to these boxes? i.e. the solenoids only control the movements between forward gears?

The selector lever controls the manual valve which selects manual 1-2-3 and drive, reverse, neutral and park. The electronic solenoids can override any of these modes except park and neutral.
Ie. it won't let you go into reverse when driving forward and it won't let you go into 1st at say 120Km/h. It will always go to neutral if you select it. The parking mechanism is mechanically designed not to engage unless you are going slower than about 8km/hr. You may hear a racheting sound above this.

If anyone managed to get their car into reverse while driving forward it means you must have MULTIPLE solenoid failure, in fact your trans should already be in limp home mode. generating error codes etc.

it will let it go into reverse at any speed.

thats because it cant engage while the car is moving, not cause its designed not to, the rachet sound is it trying to engage, so its still bad for the gearbox.

not the case either.

there is probably differences between the boxes fitted to each model, some will be more idiotproof than others.

Yeah that information was for the electronically controlled transmissions. I know it's true becasue I am sitting here looking at the spec for them. It really shouldn't let you go into reverse while driving forward. Perhaps old transmissions before electronic controls don't have this feature but i'm pretty sure they would, its basic idiot proofing.

If the solenoids that prevent you from going into reverse fail then you will go into reverse!

Anyone care to try putting their car in reverse while driving about 20 - 40 km/hr ? See what happens!
