Had similar problem. My pull out lever was getting jammed, and couldn't be pulled out far enough to disengage the ratchet thing from the gear (very technical terms I know).
Once you pop it off check that it all looks right, and grease it up a bit. I found a the "ratchet thing" was rubbing to hard against a gear underneath it, and had created a burr that it was getting caught on.
If you can make any sense of that (it's really hard to explain :P) I hope it helps :D

is the ratchet underneath the seat, not on the side of the seat

Yeah i've seen this happen, silly thing that makes it happen, I've seen them go damp, and get a bit rusty, Last time I was adjusting one in the car the leaver broke lol, you can always take the lever off and use some WD40, and a shifter to change the highet

My dad had the same problem in his NC Fairlane Ghia. Just replaced the seat height adjuster, but before this, my dad just sat in the seat and his own body weight lowered the seat. Had to fix it before he traded it in for the NL Fairlane Ghia.
