Rotary wire brushes etch the surface and are sometimes harder to get the marks out than the original casting ones. persistance and sand paper, sanding drums and sandpaper flap wheels on dremels/die grinders are your best bet.

Do polished surfaces also attract more heat, or just chrome..?
