I took mine off with only a little trouble. Obviously you have to take the wheels off first... Then I just pushed on the shields from the outside using a socket extension. They're a right bastard to get off 'cos they are so tight, but it's very straight forward... kinda like taking the lid off a tin of paint... loosen one point, move to the next, loosen, move etc. etc. I also have these covers, Is it possible to remove them without damaging them? in case I change my mind.

When I removed mine, I got all 4 off without a single crack. When I said (wrote) that I used a socket extension I meant the big bastard you use for extra leverage (some call it a strong-arm). I used the padded (handle) end to push from the outside and then jammed a screw-driver in the gap this created. Then move to the next gap between spokes and repeat until it just pops off. It does take some force as they are really tight.
